Technology Department

Technology is unique from the other Learning Areas as it requires of learners to demonstrate creativity and innovation when solving problems based on human needs wants or a given problem. Technology must be taught using real life situations as a teaching context. A scenario is a description of a real life situation given to learners to identify a problem and then design a solution to the problem. Case studies developed from learner’s immediate environment or taken from articles in newspapers or magazines that learners are familiar with are often a good starting point when introducing new knowledge, skills or values. 

Learners learn new skills and then they must do smaller resource based activities that allow them to develop the knowledge and skills needed to be applied in the formal assessment task.  Learners are given an opportunity to develop understanding of the knowledge concepts and practice making skills before they are applied in a formal assessment task. Technology is a very broad learning area and a focus on isolated processes will not give learners a wide scope of the Learning Area. We make learning interesting for learners by using different learning styles, auditory, visual, kinaesthetic and tactile, during the process of teaching, learning and assessment.

Language is promoted when learners do presentation either in a poster, portfolio or other written reports and oral presentations.

The development of the learner’s Interpersonal Skills: The “Self” is promoted when working on their own during investigating, planning, making and evaluating.

The development of the Learner’s Interpersonal Skills: The “Social” is promoted when working in a group or helping others when making (?)

The promotion of Logic Thinking is central to the problem solving nature of Technology.

The Physical Development of learners is enhanced through the manipulation of tools and material when making.

Graphic communication skills in technology develops the learners Visual perception of object in their environment by visualising ideas and estimating dimensions when designing.

Learners use knowledge and practical skills to solve problems either in groups or on their own by making practical solutions and communicating the technological processes demonstrated.  Technology lends itself to true Outcomes Based Teaching in that it makes use of real life situations as a context for teaching, learning and assessment.
