LEARNING SUPPORT  /  DIDACTICS  /  REMEDIAL

Structures at De Vrije Zee are in place

The SBST consists of…

  • Learning Support Educator:  Louise la Grange – 2 periods per week during school hours
  • Remedial Team:  Louise la Grange; Janien Potgieter; Marjorie Schonken. Every Monday from 14:30 – 15:15
  • Didactics:  Each educator teaching Mathematics. Every second Tuesday from 14:30 – 15:15

1. SBST (School Based Support Team)

Educators and the principal meet every Wednesday.

Task: discuss learners with:

Learning problems/barriers; emotional development; disciplinary problems; language barriers

We do co-opt experts from the community as needed:
– social welfare
– SAPD
– Learner Support Advisor
– EMDC
– Psychologists
– private/EMDC, if necessary.

Learners who are possible candidates for a School of Skills, eg. Westcliff and/or De Grendel, may only be applied for to attend one of these schools, when the team has discussed the learner and due process was followed. Grade 7 parents cannot apply for learners themselves. The Schools of Skills will refer you back to the primary school. Learners with extreme learning barriers, who has turned 14 and is in Grade 6, will also qualify for these schools. Mrs Louise la Grange is dealing with these referrals. Parents are most welcome to discuss it with her.

2. WHO ARE THE LEARNERS WITH LEARNING PROBLEMS OR LEARNING BARRIERS WHO RECEIVE LEARNING SUPPORT:

(a) Educators identify these learners in their interaction with them.

Should your child be identified, you will receive a Parental Consent Form from the educator, which you must sign and return immediately. No learner can be supported and/or discussed unless we have received these consent forms.

(b) Notification by previous schools / psychologists.

(c) Parents may request help.

(d) Occupational therapists / Doctors

(e) Learners diagnosed by a doctor with ADD, ADHD, DYSLEXIA or any other medical reason why he/she manifests with learning difficulties.

NB! IF A CHILD NEEDS TO TAKE MEDICINE FOR ADD/ADHD, PLEASE NOTIFY THE TEACHER AND LEARNING SUPPORT EDUCATOR. IT IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE THAT MEDICATION TAKEN, IS STRICTLY MONITORED. IF A CHILD IS DIAGNOSED TO TAKE MEDICINE AND A PARENT REFUSES TO GIVE PRESCRIBED MEDICINE, THIS CHILD CAN BE PHASED OUT IF HE/SHE DISRUPTS THE CLASS OR FAILS TO SUCCEED. WE NEED TO WORK TOGETHER FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE LEARNER.

(f) A child receives Learning Support for 2 years, or less if sufficient progress has been made, then he/she will be phased out. If he/she does not show enough progress in this period, the child will be supported by the Didactics or Remedial Team.
